Periodontics

What is Periodontics?

Periodontics is the treatment of periodontal disease (Gum disease), which is very common and can be characterized into two major groups: Gingivitis and Periodontitis. Gingivitis is known as the inflammation of the gums and surrounding tissue. Some common signs are bleeding and redness of the gums. Plaque and calculus (calcium deposits stuffed with bacteria) can exaggerate the signs of gum disease.

When gum disease is accompanied with bone loss and recession it is known as Periodontitis. Periodontitis can cause bad breath, and in severe cases the loss of teeth. With the loss of bone, teeth also lose support causing wiggly teeth with time.

Brushing twice a day, flossing, and periodic dental hygiene appointments are ways to promote healthy gums and prevent disease. Life style factors including smoking and poor oral hygiene can increase the risk of gum disease.

Research shows a very strong link between gum disease and heart disease which is why maintaining oral hygiene is essential.
